Abstract

This paper outlines a research and development process of a low-cost head tracking device for virtual reality systems to provide users with a correct 3D visual perspective and basic body interactions. The technology and development tools are based on SteamVR Tracking technology by Valve Corporation. The head tracker involves an integrated electric circuit board and a rigid frame with photodiode sensors attached to a pair of 3D shutter glasses. One or two lighthouse base station(s) achieve the tracking by sending out infrared signals to time-stamp movement. The development process involves iterations of sensor placement simulation, 3D printing of prototype, optical and sensor calibration, and reliability testing. The current prototype can be used in imseCAVE, a CAVE- based system in HKU and has the potential for other applications such as for education or businesses usage.
