Abstract
Immersion, as a concept, has been used for centuries not merely for enhancing the entertainment experience, but as a powerful mechanism to distract from reality. The purpose of this literature review is to present different approaches, definitions, main applications and features that induce immersion. We found a dichotomy between views of immersion (system-centered approach versus human-centered approach) and focused the discussion on immersive systems embracing games, applications, technology, and virtual reality. We proposed a didactic explanation of our point of view of immersion and listed the main benefits of its utilization. This theme is relevant for future research of a 3D interactive framework development. We intend to prove a relation between immersion and the enhancement of a 3D design review process.
