Abstract

Users retain their own natural height by default in room-scale virtual reality (VR) applications. However, this phenomenon is largely unexplored in academia. Given the universal presence of user height as a factor in room-scale VR designs, we seek to operationalize it as a design property. We contribute by providing a preliminary, high-level interaction model consisting of properties and principles that are useful for including height in VR designs and present a pilot study that uses these properties and principles in exploring the effects of user scaling in a networked multi-user scenario. The potential for future work is plentiful and could include factoring in the demographical composition of the user group, exploring interaction techniques suited for major size disparities between users, and specifically exploring the effects of height and scale in single-user applications.
