Abstract
In this paper we present a study investigating the impact of head motion on realism, its effect on perceived emotional intensity, and how it affects the affinity for facial expressions. The purpose of this work is to enhance the realism of interactive virtual characters. We designed an experiment to measure the impact through a combination of methods. This included subject behavioural data rating designed facial animations in Virtual Reality (VR) and questionnaire ratings. The results showed that head motions had a positive impact on facial expressions, they enhance realism, perceived emotional intensity, and affinity for virtual characters.
